Ostrovany

Children cooling down during tropical temperatures at the Roma settlement in Ostrovany. In 2010, the town of Ostrovany received international media attention when the town council built a wall deviding private gardens/property and the neighbouring Roma settlement. Several media outlets compared the look of Ostrovany’s imposing 150-metre long wall with the Berlin Wall. Mayor Mr. Rehak sees the building as a "fence" and not a wall. The village of Ostrovany has nowadays 591 inhabitants - the Roma settlement 1297 (January 2013). In compare to 1988 the residents of the Roma settlement increased for more then double (village had 574 inhabitants and the Roma settlement 577).
