98 imagesIn 1994 I moved to Prague to study photography at the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). By accident I found a flat in Prague 3 - Žižkov, the quarter where I still do live after 25 years. The project was a documentary about the changes in the quarter and I photographed those images in-between 1994 and 1996. As I just moved from Germany to Czech Republic I was not able to communicate in Czech and not so many people were speaking a foreign language I could use. I always had a paper written in Czech with me which I used for the communication. "Hello, my name is Björn and I am a student from FAMU. Please can I photograph you ?". Very often the reaction was that people were just running away. Some did not and so the whole project started. Later I made small prints for the people which had allowed me to photograph them and while giving those photographs to them I asked if they would allow me to photograph them at home.
28 imagesDuring my studies in 1996 I was allowed to document sculptor Olbram Zoubek in his studio for a period of one year. His only condition was that I should not disturb him during work. It was pure magic to watch and observe him while he was creating his impressive sculptures. Sometimes I was for hours there and we did not speak at all. Olbram Zoubek (21 April 1926 – 15 June 2017) was a contemporary Czech sculptor and designer. His work was inspired by Swiss-Italian sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Zoubek was particularly well known for having taken a death mask of Jan Palach, a Charles University student who burned himself to death in protest over the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. One of his most famous works is his "Memorial to the Victims of Communism" in Prague.
25 imagesGoalball is a team sport designed specifically for athletes with a vision impairment. Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponents' goal. The ball is thrown by hand and never kicked. Using ear-hand coordination, originating as a rehabilitation exercise, the sport has no able-bodied equivalent (Wikipedia). For about a year I followed the Czech Paralympic team in Goalball.
